Work begins to check safety of 6,000 headstones in Witney cemeteries
10:30am Thursday 5th September 2013 in News
INSPECTORS have begun the task of checking graves in Witney to make sure they are safe.
Jim Thomson, director of memorial safety firm Teleshore, and Witney Town Council works and contracts supervisor John Hickman visited Tower Hill Cemetery on Tuesday to demonstrate the testing process to families.
The town council, which has responsibility for upkeep of full graveyards in the town, plans to check up to 6,000 headstones over the next few months in Tower Hill and Holy Trinity cemeteries.
If graves are found to be imminently in danger of toppling, they will be laid flat and relatives will be contacted in order to organise replacement headstones.
