£1.2k charity women race on third of triathlon each
THESE three friends may have slightly misunderstood the “tri” element of a triathlon but they tried their hardest.
In June each of them completed one leg of the 2013 Blenheim Tri and raised £1,249 for Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance.
After their husbands took part in the race last year, Emma Hartley, Anne Morgan and Vicky Spence decided they were not to be outdone.
Mrs Hartley, 41, from Woolstone, is a fitness instructor at Richmond retirement village in Letcombe Regis, and opted to do the 750-metre swim.
She had the care village pool at her disposal to train in twice a week.
She said: “Having such great facilities available to us gave us all added impetus to get into shape. The spa pool was very welcome at the end of each training session.”
On June 8, after training for two months, the trio arrived at their starting lines.
Mrs Morgan, 40, from Ashbury had to cycle 20km. She said: “The day was a fantastic family day and there was a great sense of camaraderie.
“The three of us were just a bag of nerves at the start, but as soon as we finished, we were already talking about taking part in 2014 and we are all planning to do the triathlon again next year.”
Mrs Spence, 40, completed the team’s race by running 5.4km. She added: “We received tremendous support from everyone and we are thrilled to have raised this money for the Air Ambulance.
“Blenheim Palace is such a wonderful setting and the enthusiasm of the organisers, of everyone taking part and those supporting the event made it a great day.”
About 7,000 people took part in this year’s Blenheim triathlon, which is the second largest in the country.
Accepting the cheque, air ambulance fundraising manager Eleanor Green said: “We are constantly amazed by the fundraising efforts of our supporters.
“Nothing is too difficult or too challenging when they are raising money for their local Air Ambulance.
“We really appreciate the efforts of Anne, Emma and Vicky in raising this money and would like to say a heartfelt thankyou to them and their supporters, for raising such an incredible sum.”
