Speed date event to swap council homes
5:00pm Tuesday 17th September 2013 in News
OXFORD City Council’s next event for tenants looking to move into smaller properties will take place on Thursday.
All council and housing association tenants who want to downsize and avoid the “bedroom tax” by swapping their homes can attend the so-called speed dating event.
Under new rules, working-age tenants who have a spare bedroom will have their housing benefit cut.
The speed dating events were set-up after new figures revealed that since the introduction of the tax, more than 70 people registered an interest in swapping properties.
However, people can also attend if they are looking to move to a smaller place, a larger place to accommodate their family, or to move areas to be closer to work, schools or family.
City councillor Scott Seamons, executive board member for housing, said: “These events are proving more and more popular. More people than ever are turning to these services when it comes to finding a new home.
“We know that many people in Oxford are desperate to move to get the right property for the size of their household and to save costs.”
The city council has now run three events and identified 58 potential exchanges.
Thursday’s event takes place in Rose Hill Community Centre between 2pm and 4pm. The city council recommends bringing a photograph of your property.
