Green, green artificial turf ready for action in Carterton
AN all-weather sports pitch has been opened in Carterton after almost £170,000 of investment.
The pitch at Carterton Community College, in Upavon Way, was refurbished over the summer with artificial turf.
West Oxfordshire District Council invested more than £167,000 in modernising the pitch with a 40mm -thick surface officials say looks and feels like grass.
The ‘3G hybrid pitch’, says the council, will be suitable for sports such as football, hockey and tag rugby.
It was reopened on Monday and will be used by the school and groups such as Carterton Football Club.
Iain Bilton, deputy head of Carterton Community College, said: “We are looking forward to using it. It’s going to be fabulous, a truly outstanding surface for an outstanding community.”
Pupil Chloe Morris, 12, from Carterton, said: “We are really excited about the new 3G surface and the opportunities that we will get as a school.”
Bethany Saville, 12, from Carterton, added: “We can’t wait to start using it in our PE lessons, and also to train and play our fixtures on.”
The launch comes shortly after a new floodlit multi-use pitch built in the grounds of Bartholomew School in Eynsham opened.
That was achieved through £150,000 of developer money from the Swinford Green housing scheme in the village, secured by West Oxfordshire District Council, and a £47,000 contribution from the school.
Richard Langridge, the distrcit council's cabinet member for communities with responsibility for leisure, said of the Carterton site: “One of our priorities is to support residents to be active and stay healthy, and investing in sports facilities is a vital part of this.
“This is the first-ever 40mm 3G turf pitch for community use in our district and we are delighted that it will support a wide range of sportspeople.”
West Oxfordshire now has three all-weather pitches.
There is also a sand-filled short pile all-weather pitch at the Witney ATP site, in Gordon Way.
The pitches are managed on behalf of the council by Better, its leisure services provider.
