New estate plans for the ‘Downton’ village
5:00pm Wednesday 2nd October 2013 in News
Two housing developers are looking to build houses in the West Oxfordshire village where popular TV series Downton Abbey is filmed.
Richborough Estates is holding a consultation about its ideas tomorrow for a site off New Road, Bampton, which it bought this spring. It has not yet submitted a planning application to West Oxfordshire District Council.
Meanwhile another developer from Cheshire Gladman Developments has put in a planning application for up to 127 homes on land off Aston Road.
Ward councillor Mark Booty said there would be a mixed reaction from residents, adding: “We want places for our children to live but we will always need to look at the suitability of the plans.”
Resident Steve Radband said: “There are a lot of young people in Bampton who grew up here and want to stay but are having to leave because they can’t afford to live here.
“With Downton Abbey being filmed here it has pushed up the price of homes and young people can’t afford to buy.”
Richborough’s consultation takes place at Bampton Primary School in Bowling Green Close, between 4.30pm to 7.30pm.
