Rock Nativity show finds its Virgin Mary, but needs more singers
THE search to find the Virgin Mary in Blackbird Leys is over.
But while the lead has been filled in the Blackbird Leys Production of Rock Nativity, there are still more roles up for grabs and the community is being asked to get involved.
The cast members should be from the estate and happy to sing and act.
Rock Nativity is written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent and combines traditional carols with gospel and rock styles.
The production follows the group’s successful performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, which was performed in February.
The Rev Heather Carter, from the Church of the Holy Family, said: “Rock Nativity is quite a lot of gospel and funky stuff with traditional carols in it.
“It will tell the nativity story from Mary being told she is going to have a baby to the baby being born. There will be parts for everybody who shows up.
“It is a community event and I think there are five or six who go to church out of the 30 people who are taking part.”
The production’s music director Trevor Davies, from Chipping Norton, said: “Blackbird Leys Choir and lots of members of the community are getting involved.
“It should be a very exciting show. We are very open to people joining.”
Ms Carter is also keen to bring the community together in the run up to Christmas with a mural painted on the side of her church of the nativity scene.
She wants the estate’s residents to get involved on Sunday, November 17.
Ms Carter said: “We did an Easter mural and that was a huge success.
“It caused quite a stir in the community and this time we thought we would paint it again with the nativity scene.”
She said they will build the picture up over 24 days like an advent calendar.
The next rehearsal of Rock Nativity is tomorrow, Wednesday, November 6 from 6.30pm at the church in Cuddesdon Way, Blackbird Leys.
The show will run for three nights from December 12 from 7.30pm at the church.
