POLICE today appealed for witnesses to a crash involving a lorry and a car yesterday morning in which a man died.

A man travelling in a BMW towards Swindon was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on a single carriageway stretch of the A420, near Tubney.

A woman and child travelling in the BMW and the lorry driver were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

A police spokesman said today that the woman's injuries were serious, but not life-threatening. The child and the lorry driver suffered minor injuries.

Police closed the A420 for most of the day after the collision, which happened at 10.40am as the BMW travelled towards Swindon and was involved in a collision with the lorry coming in the other direction.

Anyone with information is urged to contact PC Laurence Kelleher at Abingdon Roads Policing, via 0845 8 505 505.

The death is the latest in a long line on Oxfordshire's roads this year, making it the second worst year since the turn of the century with two weeks still remaining.

Also yesterday, the names of two people killed on the M40 near Watlington on Sunday were confirmed.

Fourteen-year-old Raymond Lovlace died when the Mitsubishi Trojan he was travelling in overturned.

Another motorist, Gary Roberts, 40, was killed when he was struck by a lorry as he went to help Raymond and his family.

Raymond was a passenger in the Trojan with his father and sister as it drove north towards their home in Birmingham, flipping over just before junction 6. No other vehicle was involved.

Several motorists stopped to help the stricken family, including Mr Roberts.

However, after parking his Saab on the hard shoulder and walking over to the overturned car in the carriageway, he was hit by a lorry and killed.

Insp Paul Winks said: "Mr Roberts either witnessed the collision or arrived shortly afterwards.

"It is a complete tragedy that he appeared to have been a Good Samaritan going to the assistance of others and was killed while doing that." Raymond's father and sister were both injured. Mr Lovlace was released from hospital on Sunday, while the sister spent the night there for observation.

Each crash is being treated as a separate collision. The lorry driver and driver of the Trojan were both arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and have been released on police bail, pending further inquiries, said Mr Winks.

"It is early in the investigation and we have a number of witnesses to speak to," he said.

"Several people stopped to help the family and there was also a coach which stopped so it is a relatively big inquiry.

"However we are still appealing for anyone who saw either accident or the Trojan before it crashed to come forward."

Anyone with information can call Mr Winks on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
