Press criticises Oxford University Student Union election

The Oxford Times: Press criticises Oxford Union president Press criticises Oxford Union president

THE election of the new president of the Oxford University Student Union shows a lack of interesting people at the university, according to a New Statesman article.

Louis Trup was elected president after a campaign in which he pledged to turn the Bodleian Library into a nightclub.

Writing in the magazine, Joe Collin praised his eye-catching election campaign.

But he added: “Our fetishisation of his charisma only demonstrates the dearth of remotely interesting people elsewhere.

“This election result is just another symptom of disengagement with the political class, even if this time it’s only the student political class we are rebelling against.”

No, it shows that the real talent runs for office in college Junior Common Room elections or in university clubs. The Student Union has long been a jokey outfit which most undergraduates never visit or hear of because student life is based in college rather than in the union. In other universities without a college system the student union offers the central meeting point, main bar, concert venue etc. In Oxford the union (next to Bonn Square, I have heard) is irrelevant. That's why it throws up joke candidates, left-wing careerists and those who have no chance to win at their own college.
