A DEVOURING beast is dealing with leftovers at Larkrise School in East Oxford, and it is not one of the children.

A new Ridan Composter, which allows the school to compost food waste from both cooked food and meat, has been installed and will be operated by the school’s eco-committee.

The final product, a high quality compost, will then be ready in as little as two months and will be used in the school garden. The composter has been installed as part of a pilot scheme run by Oxfordshire Green Schools on behalf of Oxfordshire County Council and Oxfordshire Waste Partnership.

Teacher Ed Finch said: “Staff and students are very excited about the arrival of the Ridan as it provides a solution for disposing of our food waste and produces free, good quality compost for our vegetable gardens.”
