Celebrations as latest Ofsted report raises status to good

PUPILS, staff and governors at an Abingdon primary school are celebrating their latest report from school inspectors Ofsted.

The education inspectors have rated 429-pupil St Nicolas Primary, in Boxhill Walk, good in all areas, resulting in the overall rating of good, an improvement on the satisfactory rating inspectors issued in 2011.

The achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management were all judged good in an inspection made on November 19 and when inspectors observed lessons in all classes and visited 25 lessons.

Headteacher Dick Furniss said: “We are thrilled.

“I would like to record my thanks to the staff, children, parents and governors who have made such an important contribution to this judgement.

“The team spirit across the whole school is fantastic.”

The report said teaching has improved from satisfactory to good since the last inspection and teachers use their knowledge of what pupils already know to plan interesting and challenging learning activities and high-quality extra support, leading to pupils making good progress.

One of the reasons the school is not yet outstanding, the report said, was because school leaders were not yet clear enough in setting urgent deadlines for improvement in achievement for all groups.

Well done St Nicks! Good to see a "North Abingdon" school catching up some of those in the South of the town.

Fr those who pay any credence to such things as Ofsted....it must be a relief that the schools are on the up (and their house moves were worth it)!

Clearly you weren't educated there; it's St. Nic's. No K.

As for your snide reference to house moves, yes it was thanks. Anything to get away from the bullying experienced in the previous "Outstanding" school my son attended.
