CHRISTMAS was given a rock twist by residents of Blackbird Leys and beyond over the weekend. The Blackbird Leys production of Rock Nativity held the finale of its three shows on Saturday.

The 30-strong cast set aside traditional Christmas carols for an alternative rock show featuring the Blackbird Leys Choir. Community residents were joined by schoolchildren from Orchard Meadow, Pegasus and Windale primary schools for the production at the Church of the Holy Family in Cuddesdon Way.

Church member Jim Hewitt, pictured left, 69, from Monks Close, played King Herod. He said: “The audience appreciated each production, and each was better than the last. It was very popular with the children and adults.

“I found it great fun. I was dragged in at the last minute as Herod. I liked being a tyrant because I don’t get much chance otherwise.”

Rehearsals for the show started in September. Rock Nativity is written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent and combines traditional carols with gospel and rock styles.
