MOTORISTS are being helped to keep to the speed limit on a busy Bicester road.

Middleton Stoney Road had a 50mph limit until a temporary limit of 30mph came into force in 2010, as work started on Kingsmere estate. The 30mph limit was later made permanent.

But because there is now no speed limit sign as people enter from Oxford Road, some drivers think it has gone back to 50mph.

Councillor Les Sibley had temporary ‘watch your speed’ signs installed in August, but has now used a community fund given to councillors for local projects to put up a speed activated warning sign.

The sign will now flash at speeding drivers reminding them of the 30mph limit.

He said: “It acts as a reminder. It will help to slow down cars and improve safety. There was no other way of alerting people this is a 30mph road.”

Police figures showed 409 motorists were fined in the road from July 2012 to June 2013, compared with 22 in 2010/11.
