A 47-YEAR-OLD man from the Oxford area died after his mobility scooter went into the River Thames at Osney last night.

Fire crews were called at 6.15pm to South Street, Osney Island to reports a man had gone down the bank into the water.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the man was swept down the river and,  by the time crews arrived, he had been pulled from the water.

Thames Valley Police said he was declared dead at the scene and his next of kin had been informed. It said his death is unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious.

Supt Christian Bunt, LPA Commander for Oxford, said: “This tragic incident highlights the dangers of using pathways which have flooded in areas including Oxford.

“The public should be particularly careful following the recent heavy rainfall, especially along the River Thames, and ensure they do not put themselves at risk by entering flood water. I urge anyone using these areas to take extra caution.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died.”

A section of pathway by Osney Lock was closed near The Punter pub and has now re-opened.
