ROADS and train services across Oxfordshire were severely disrupted last night as flooding hit areas across the county.

Abingdon Road in Oxford became the 14th road to shut due to floodwater, closing at 7pm between the junction with old Abingdon Road through to its junction with Northampton Road.

Deputy leader of the county council Rodney Rose warned drivers: “If in any doubt, don’t drive through flood water. We give advice of this nature not just with the safety of motorists in mind. It is also a question of not creating bow waves that cause problems for nearby properties.”

Around 3,500 sandbags were handed out across the county, but there were reports last night that many places had run out. Tony Jenkinson, landlord of the Duke of Monmouth pub in Abingdon Road, Oxford, said they had another delivery at around 7pm last night after giving out all of their 200 sandbags.

Elsewhere, sandbags were dropped off at Seacourt and Redbridge Park and Rides, opposite the village hall in South Hinksey, Dog Close in Adderbury and in the centre of Dorchester.

Oxford City Council spokeswoman Louisa Dean said: “Officers can assist vulnerable people whose properties are at risk of flooding by delivering sandbags. If people are concerned they should contact us on 01865 249811 and our customer service staff will be able to help.”
