A RESIDENT has called on a supermarket for the second time to carry out safety checks of its escalator.

Greig Wyllie, 34, of Danes Road, Bicester, said he saw a shopper’s trolley become stuck at the bottom of the Bicester Sainsbury’s escalator, knocking the woman over.

He said he ran and grabbed the woman and pulled her off the escalator but is worried that the emergency stop system didn’t kick in. The store opened as part of the £70m Pioneer Square town centre complex in July last year.

It comes months after the father-of-five complained to Sainsbury’s when his three-year-old daughter Ashlee’s trousers got caught in the escalator and it didn’t stop.

This week motorway incident support officer Mr Wyllie renewed his call to Sainsbury’s to fully investigate the escalator’s safety system.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “The escalators are built to an industry standard. If something gets caught in them, then the machine will stop over a short period. An immediate stop would cause any other passengers on the escalator to fall over.”
