Vintage and classic car show 'will be biggest and best yet'

The Churchill Vintage and Classic Car Show will be held in Churchill near Chipping Norton on June 8 and roughly 10 exhibitors a day are contacting organiser David Chambers asking to take part.

The 69-year-old said: “At the moment we have more than 200 entries, when normally we have about 20 or 30 at this stage. Our full capacity is 500 and we expect to meet that very quickly.”

In the past the show, which is held every two years, has raised more than £120,000 for local charities and groups.

In 2012 it raised £16,000, Mr Chambers told the Oxford Mail. It is held on Churchill village green in front of All Saints Church.

The event, to be held for the 13th time this year, started when villagers raised money for a new church roof.

“It started in 1986,” he said. “Back then we had just 38 vehicles on display and we never thought it would become so successful.”

Mr Chambers does little advertising for the show and it attracts entries mainly through word of mouth.

Charlie Webster, 64, of Minster Lovell, is bringing his Triumph Stag to the show.

He has been attending the show since it started.

“I first entered a vehicle four years ago which was placed into my care by a friend who had passed away,” he said. “It was a 1928 Bentley.”

He said the event’s success was down to its variety of exhibitors. He added: “There are not many events like it in this area.

“It is a great afternoon in a field full of interesting cars and quite often they are sorts you don’t often see like Austin Allegros and Triumph Dolomites.

“They are cars that used to be commonplace on the roads.

“It is good to have those alongside sports cars that you expect to see at a car show.”

Money raised will go to good causes including the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Lawrence Home Nurses and Chipping Norton Theatre.

Mr Chambers said the show also offers barbeques, tea and cakes, stalls and steam engines.
