A POLICE officer who allegedly stole crash victims’ details from police files was “in a relationship” with a serving prisoner after the alleged scheme had started, Winchester Crown court heard yesterday.

PC Sugra Hanif, 27, is accused of writing down personal information of people involved in car accidents from police systems and pressurising them into making personal injury claims.

At the time, she was having an affair with her co-accused Raza Khan, who ran a repair garage. The pair and Khan’s wife, Paramjeet Kaur, allegedly pocketed £600 a time for referring the drivers to legal firms.

The court heard yesterday from DC Geoff Heys of Thames Valley Police, who led the investigation who said a letter from Shiraz Riaz, a serving prisoner at HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire had been found.

“It was apparent that Miss Hanif was in a relationship with Mr Riaz. She was a serving police officer and was in a relationship with a serving prisoner.”

Cross-examining DC Heys, Khan’s defence lawyer Justin Hugheston-Roberts said Hanif had made “a considerable amount of complaints” in the past including that an ex-boyfriend sexually assaulted her in 2007, before she joined the force. She later dropped the allegations, the court heard.

Hanif, of Bretch Hill, Banbury, denies obtaining personal data and a charge of disclosing the personal data. Khan, 27, from Birmingham, denies obtaining personal data.

Kaur, 26, also from Birmingham, Khan and Hanif all deny one count of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office.

The trial continues.
