A BID to turn a former village post office and shop into a takeaway should be approved despite objections, a council planning officer has said.

The plan for Garsington Stores in Elm Drive, Garsington, has been opposed by residents and parish councillors over noise and traffic.

But a South Oxfordshire District Council planning officer recommends district councillors approve the plan next Wednesday. A report said an extraction systems, to-be-decided noise mitigation measures and a 10pm closure make the plan acceptable.

It added: “Subject to appropriate conditions, the business can operate without causing nuisance to local residents from noise, odour or from antisocial behaviour.”

Highway chiefs and the police raised no objections.

But Garsington Parish Council said the business – proposed by Tariq Khuja – is “unsuitable” as it is in a residential area.

A planned food delivery service would cause extra traffic and the premises could lead to “the gathering of young people” and there was limited parking.

One resident supported the plan but 14 objected with concerns over smell, light pollution, “youths loitering”, litter noise and traffic.

The district council’s planning committee meets at 6pm at its offices in Benson Lane, Crowmarsh Gifford.
