VOLUNTEERS at Oxford’s Seven O’Clock Club wrote in to the Oxford Mail after spotting a feature on the club in an issue of our Memory Lane column last month.

The club, which was founded in 1964 as a social club for adults with learning disabilities, is still going strong today.

It meets on Wednesday evenings between 7pm and 9pm at the Bullingdon Community Centre in Headington.

It is run by a dedicated group of volunteers of the Oxford and District branch of mental health charity Mencap.

David Feeley, who volunteers at the club with his wife Angela, said the club was still a place where people could come and relax.

The 58-year-old builder told the Oxford Mail: “We have pool, bingo, a tuck shop and arts and crafts.

“It is a nice place where members come to relax and socialise with their friends.

“We have one member, Norman Haynes, who is 92 now and he has been coming for almost 50 years – right from the beginning.

“Some people come with their carers and so it is a chance for them to have a chat as well.”

The club’s minibus, which is used to bring members to and from the Bullingdon Centre, is maintained for free by Standlake Vehicle Services, Mr Feeley said.

Every year Witney-based cakemakers the Fabulous Bakin’ Boys donate 80 cakes to the club for its New Year celebrations.

Mr Feeley, of Botley, added: “The people who come to the club have a range of disabilities and some have trouble expressing themselves.

“But you can even see them enjoying themselves – the music, the people and, of course, the noise.”
