Town to display its respect with In Bloom poppy
4:30pm Saturday 15th February 2014 in News
THE IMAGE of a giant poppy will be created in flowers this year as Witney marks 100 years since the start of the First World War.
The display near Langdale Gate is to be sown in to the red and white remembrance symbol by Witney Town Council garden contractors, to form part of the town’s entry in the Britain In Bloom floral contest.
The plants will be put in in May and are expected to be in full bloom for the judges’ visit in July.
Les Tacon, chairman of the Witney branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “What a great idea of the town council’s to use the bed for this in 2014.
“It’s very good of them to choose to mark the centenary anniversary in such a special way.
“I would like to offer my grateful thanks on behalf the Witney branch of the Royal British Legion.”
And vice-chairman of the branch Don Deaney said: “I think this is going to look great. It’s important to mark this special year in a memorable way and this certainly fits the bill.”
The council wants to hear from businesses and community organisations who want to get involved in the floral competition.
