A CYCLIST was killed yesterday on a stretch of road described by neighbours as lethal.

A 39-year-old man was last night being questioned by police following the 56-year-old cyclist’s death on Watlington Road near Garsington early yesterday morning.

The blue Nissan Micra driver, from Reading, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the accident at about 5.30am between Pettiwell and Kiln Lane.

The cyclist – who is due to be formally identified tomorrow – died at the scene.

Rachel Adams, manager of the Kings Copse mobile home park in the B480 Watlington Road, said: “We need speed cameras, speed humps or chicanes.

“It’s absolutely lethal this road.

“Why they cannot do anything about this road I do not know.

“It is just so fast. It is hell this road.”

Rachel O’Brien, of Watlington Road, said: “People drive far too fast on this road.

“You have to take your life in your own hands when you pull out.”

The 39-year-old, who uses crutches after a serious car accident in 2011, added: “Cars are dangerous things, they wreck people’s lives.”

Crash statistics were last night unavailable for the stretch of road.

Oxfordshire County Council spokesman Martin Crabtree said: “The road has a 50mph limit and there is nothing at this stage to suggest whether any additional measures would be appropriate.

“However, as with all accidents, we will await the police report.

“We keep all roads in the county under review and seek to make improvements where appropriate and where funds allow.”

Police last night appealed for anyone who witnessed the fatal crash to call them on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
