HE’S hoping to jet off to Tokyo for a three-week long scouting adventure.

But to pay for the trip 13-year-old Oliver Matthews, from Charlbury, has been organising a number of fundraising events.

The teenager is one of 36 youngsters from across Oxfordshire chosen to attend next year’s 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

They’ll be joining 30,000 scouts in the Japanese capital for a cultural trip involving language lessons and scouting activities.

There will be Scouts from across the globe at the Jamboree from July 28 to August 8.

And they each have to raise £3,195 for the trip. Oliver, who lives with his mother Fiona in Berkshire, has so far raised £2,000 through activities at his local Scout group, the 1st Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scouts.

Oliver said: “I have also been raising money through making home-made decorations. We delivered Christmas cards and I held a garden party at my grandparents’ house. I will also be hosting another curry and quiz night in Reading.”

The 13-year-old hosted a quiz and curry night at the Bull Inn, in Charlbury, which is run by his father Stuart Matthews, on Wednesday.

He said: “We had a great turnout and I hope I will have raised more towards the jamboree for that. It was a very good quiz and I got the opportunity to present the awards to the winning teams.”

Winners at the quiz night were presented with Japanese-themed presents. For the first week of his trip, Oliver will be staying with a family in Tokyo before heading off to the camp. Three Scouts will be staying with each host family.

He added: “I’m really looking forward to meeting the other scouts and learning about the Japanese culture. I can’t wait. It is going be brilliant. It is a very big festival. A Scout can only go to one Jamboree and this is my chance.”
