POLE dancers from Oxfordshire are confident they made history when they swung in time with hundreds of others around the world on Saturday.

With Wallingford instructor Jemma Carman, 31, the group of eight from the Pole Fitness Academy danced for around six minutes at the same time as people from more than 26 other countries including New Zealand, Poland, USA and Australia.

The previous record, set in 2006, was for 206 people, but Mrs Carman said organisers were confident that number would be at least doubled this time.

She said: “It feels amazing to have finally done it. Getting everybody together to practise and take part has taken a lot of organising.”

The mother-of-one, who has been pole dancing since 2008, added: “The routine itself was quite basic, but it was getting us all in time that we had to work on.”

The group has raised £250 for the Florence Nightingale Hospice in Aylesbury from the attempt.

To verify the record, they had to gather video and photo evidence, and have two independent witnesses and a steward attend.

One of the witnesses was Jane Titchener, deputy mayor of Wallingford Town Council. She said: “This has certainly been a unique experience and it looks like they have put a huge amount of work into it.”

It is not yet known when the world record could be confirmed, said Mrs Carmen.
