A WOMAN was killed after her bike was in a collision with a car in Abingdon yesterday.

The 68-year-old was named locally as life-long Abingdon resident Janet Hagerty, of Stonehill Walk.

The accident happened between 9.30am and 10am on the junction of Preston Road and Kensington Close.

Neighbours said that Mrs Hagerty, a mother of two sons and a grandmother, may have been cycling to her tai-chi class.

Police and paramedics attended the scene, and an air ambulance landed in the field of nearby Thameside School, but the woman was driven to hospital by ambulance.

She died of her injuries at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.

Christine Janson, who lives opposite the scene of the accident on Preston Road, said: “I just heard this bang. I looked out of the window and she was on the floor, the bike was all buckled, people were gathered around her.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said she had been a friend of Mrs Hagerty all her life and she would be greatly missed.

The woman said Mrs Hagerty went to Larkmead School in Abingdon and later worked at the Pavlova leatherworks and Medisense in Abingdon.

She said: “Janet was a lovely lady. She was always helpful, kind and caring. We are all going to miss her.”

She also said that she thought the junction of Preston Road and Kensington Close was notoriously dangerous.

There was also a collision involving a motorcyclist in his 30s and three other vehicles at about 5.15pm yesterday on the A4095 in Bicester between Skimmingdish Lane and Banbury Road. His condition was not known at the time of going to press.
