PUPILS have taken inspiration from the classics as they aim to create an Oxford-inspired mosaic at Cheney School.

The Roman-style mosaic, which depicts scenes from Oxford city including a bike and the River Thames, will be placed on the tower at the front of the school in Headington, when it is complete.

The team of 16 students has been working on the mosaic in design technology classes, led by mosaics expert Claire Goodall.

Dr Lorna Robinson, above, director of the Iris Project which is promoting the classics in state schools, said: “The students have really been involved with the design process. They’ve also really enjoyed learning how to make a mosaic.

“We started in January and hope to finish by April.”

The project is part of a series of workshops run by the East Oxford Community Classics Centre, founded by the Iris project.
