AN ACCUSED rapist said he went with a drunk woman to a hotel room “to see if she was OK”.

Kirankumar Solanki was accused of following his alleged victim and raping her in the Victoria House Hotel, George Street, Oxford, in the early hours of September 3 last year.

Prosecutor Graham Smith said Solanki met the 20-year-old in central Oxford after she had been to The Bridge nightclub, Hythe Bridge Street.

At Oxford Crown Court on Friday Mr Smith took the defendant, whose first language is Hindi and was assisted by an interpreter, through CCTV of the evening.

He suggested Solanki was following his alleged victim and asked: “Did you want something to happen?”

The witness replied: “No. It was not like that. I wanted to meet up with my friends. “But first I wanted to see if she was OK.”

The barrister asked Solanki why he stayed with the drunk complainant after taking her to a hotel room.

Mr Smith said: “There was no need for you to stay at all, was there?”

The defendant said: “Yes, to see that she was asleep.”

Solanki, of Cottesmore Road, Oxford, denies committing two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He said they had consensual sex.

The trial continues.
