A man believed to be linked to two robberies in Banbury was armed with a gun, according to witnesses.

The first incident took place at the Esso petrol station, in Ermont Way, on Monday at about 10.30pm.

A man walked into the store and demanded money from the tills and from a customer being served at the time. Both the staff member and customer refused to hand over money and the offender left the store on foot.

The man was described as white, about 5ft 10in, of medium build and aged in his twenties. He was wearing a white Kangol hooded jumper with the hood up, cream trousers, black shoes, gloves and a scarf.

The staff member believed he was holding a black handgun and small black plastic bags.

The second robbery happened at the Co-op store in Ferriston at about 8.45am on Tuesday.

A man entered the store and again demanded money from the tills. A staff member believed he was holding a black handgun and handed over a sum of money before the suspect left the store on foot.

The suspect was described as white, about 5ft 8in, in his thirties and of skinny build. He was wearing a black hooded top and jeans.

Police are linking the two incidents and are appealing for witnesses. No arrests have been made.

Inspector Steven Raffield said: “I would like to reassure the public in Banbury that this type of offence is extremely rare and that Thames Valley Police is conducting a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.”

Anyone with information should call the police via the non-emergency 101 number.
