A 20-YEAR-OLD who was convicted of breaching his Asbo by swearing inside St Aldate’s police station, has avoided a prison sentence.

Jed Denton, of Underhill Circus, Barton, was given a two-year antisocial behaviour order by Oxford magistrates in 2012, which banned him from using abusive, threatening or sexually explicit language in any public place.

But in January, he was found guilty after a trial of breaching the order on May 22, 2012, when he shouted and swore in an attempt to get his vehicle returned after it had been seized.

Denton admitted entering St Aldate’s police station and using bad language while speaking to desk staff, but said he was just using his normal vocabulary and denied being abusive.

Peter Du Feu, defending Denton, told the jury his client might be “obnoxious” and a “thorough nuisance” but he had been in the right and his car had eventually been returned.

Despite this, Denton was found guilty at Oxford Crown Court and on Thursday, he was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, with a thinking skills requirement, a curfew for two months and supervision for two years. Passing sentence Judge Gordon Risius told Denton: “You naturally wanted your car back, but these days there are procedures for everything and when you felt you were getting nowhere you resorted to abusing the civilian staff behind the desk.

“Next time, if there is a next time, I suggest you listen carefully to what the procedure is and you treat the person you are speaking to with some respect because they are far more likely to help you than if you resort to abusing them which, not surprisingly, seems to get people’s backs up."

Denton will also gave to pay an £80 victims’ surcharge.
