A DRIVER was caught speeding in fog at 84mph in a 30mph zone.

Edward Hembrow, 29, was speeding along Cuddesdon Road, Horspath in his Mercedes E250 at about 8.30am on January 21 when he was caught on a police video camera.

Pc Steve Moses said Hembrow – who admitted dangerous driving – said someone could have been seriously injured or killed.

Yesterday police also revealed that during a safety check in Watlington Road in Cowley one driver was caught shaving and another was brushing his teeth.

Hembrow pleaded guilty at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on February 28 and on Friday magistrates sentenced him to a 12-month community order and 200 hours of unpaid work.

Pc Moses, based at Banbury police station, who led the investigation, said after the hearing that the offence took place within a mile of Hembrow’s home at The Green in Horspath.

He added: “The driver is very lucky, and people in the community are very lucky that he did not injure or kill someone.

“This sort of driving will not be tolerated on our roads and Thames Valley Police will seek prosecution of any drivers who flout the law.

“It was by pure luck that someone was not seriously injured or killed, especially when you bear in mind the poor weather conditions, location, time of day and the speed involved.”

Hembrow was also disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Pc Moses said Hembrow would have to sit an extended driving test at the end of the ban.

In Cowley yesterday, 25 other drivers were caught with no seatbelt, while 10 were on the phone. One car was seized because the tax disc was seven months out of date.
