A WOMAN who says a pensioner raped her denied she is trying to “blacken his name” at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.

Terry Haynes, of Mathews Way, Wootton near Abingdon, denies 17 counts of rape, 11 counts of indecent assault and two attempted rapes in relation to two different women, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

The 71-year-old is alleged to have committed the offences in Abingdon and Swindon over a 10-year period dating back to the early 1980s.

The court heard that he was known to others as Reverend Haynes.

Lisa Matthews, defending, said of the woman’s claims: “That is complete and utter rubbish isn't it?

“The reality is that you were very angry... and you have done your best to blacken his name.”

But the woman said: “I hold no anger towards him.”

She said she had made an earlier complaint but was under pressure to withdraw it.

Giving evidence, Caroline Walters, a police constable for Thames Valley Police in the family protection unit, said she had spoken to the other woman involved in the case in 1993 and 1994.

The trial continues.
