IT takes immense courage to see through a prosecution of your own father for raping you.

And it takes even more character to then say that you forgive him.

Today we report the powerful comments of Teresa Haynes, the woman who yesterday waived her anonymity after her father was found guilty at Oxford Crown Court for sexually abusing her and another victim.

Miss Haynes was also the victim of paedophile James Summers, who was jailed for 18 years back in 2012.

Yesterday a jury convicted her father of 12 counts of raping her during her childhood, plus another 11 counts of indecently assaulting her.

We know the terrible scars sexual abuse leaves and it is doubly so when the attacker is one of the two people you should be able to trust most in the world.

No-one should underestimate the courage it takes to confront these demons and be prepared to go through the whole court process to bring your abuser to book.

While she has received help, it is Miss Haynes who had to stand alone in the witness box to tell her story to 12 strangers.

For most of us there would be a deep well of hatred for the abuser, but Miss Haynes has said she has forgiven her father so that she can move on with her life.

Her 71-year-old father now faces a lengthy jail sentence. We hope Miss Haynes is now able to start a new chapter of her life free from this traumatic past.
