IT looked like drivers had stepped back in time when staff at a former RAF base turned up for work.

Ten staff took part in a national classic car day organised by Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans after he revealed the plan on his breakfast show with all proceeds going to Children in Need.

Some of the vehicles driven to Bicester Heritage, at the RAF Bicester site, off Buckingham Road, were 80 years old.

The day, last Friday, also marked the first anniversary of Bicester Heritage taking control of the site, which it bought from the Ministry of Defence. The site is being renovated and the aim is to create a multi-million pound heritage motor and aviation business park.

Among the vehicles was a 1926 Alvis Ducksback, a 1930 Austin 7, a 1924 Vauxhall 30-98, 1932 Riley Penguin, and a 1974 Ford Capri Mk2.

Charlie Morgan, managing director of Historit Ltd, which is based at the site, said: “We were pleased to see a good number of vehicles in our specialist storage business being used to make the most of the classic car day.

“Driving them is what it is all about.”

Bicester Heritage managing director Daniel Geoghegan said: “Chris Evans is championing the use of historic vehicles and we were delighted to support him.”
