A BOY who was out cycling with friends along the A420 near Southmoor has died.

It is understood the 12-year-old, who is believed to be a pupil at Matthew Arnold School, was riding along the dual carriageway at about 4.30pm on Saturday when he was involved in an accident.

As he reached the Southmoor turning, near the Lamb and Flag pub, he was involved in a collision with a Swindon-bound grey Honda CRV.

An air ambulance and two road ambulances went to the scene and the boy was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he later died.

Eleven more people at the scene for shock, but no-one else was taken to hospital.

Southmoor parish council chairman Brian Forster said he understood the boy was a pupil at Matthew Arnold School, Cumnor, and was Polish.

Mr Forster said: “This is a notoriously dangerous stretch of road, and this is not the first person to have been killed there.”

A Swindon man in his 30s died in a collision involving a car and two lorries last Sunday, between Buckland and Highworth, hundreds of yards from Saturday’s fatal accident.

Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact police the non-emergency number 101.
