THEY go the extra mile for their sport clubs every day.

Now three Oxford sporting heroes have been selected to carry the Queen’s baton ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Juliet Field, 67, Ian Warland, 50, and Jonny Pemberton, 33, will carry the baton to a range of events taking place across Oxford on Friday, June 6.

The three sporting stars were selected by Oxford City Council, which has not yet announced the fourth baton bearer for this year’s event.

The Queen’s Baton Relay will visit the Cutteslowe Summer Festival in Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park, where there will be free sport sessions and a zumbathon.

Mrs Field, from Cutteslowe, was thrilled to hear the news.

She said: “The Commonwealth Games is always exciting. We all did so well in the Olympics.”

The mother-of-three has supported Cherwell Gymnastics Club for 30 years and started coaching when her daughter Hazel Walsh joined the club.

Mrs Field said: “Our younger daughter got involved with the gym and she absolutely loved it.

“I’m not a teacher at all, but I enjoy the coaching.

“Gymnastics is a really good sport for keeping teenagers involved with sport.”

Mrs Field is looking forward to taking part in this year’s baton relay and hopes to catch some of the summer’s games, which run in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3.

Mrs Field, a trustee of the Cutteslowe Community Association, is a keen badminton player and regularly works at the St Michael and All Angels Church in Summertown.

Fellow baton bearer Ian Warland said: “I run the junior section at the Oxford City Athletics Club and do a lot of other stuff at the club.

“I started when I took my daughter Kirsty along.”

Mr Warland, from Headington, previously won the Sport England South of England Volunteer of the Year.

A keen sportsman, Mr Warland said: “It is good to be recognised for the work you put in.”

Jonny Pemberton, from Oxford, will also be carrying a baton after volunteering with the table tennis initiative Ping! Oxford and the Oxfordshire Mental Health Trust.
