PUBS in West Oxfordshire could be protected under laws marking them as assets of community value.

West Oxfordshire District Council’s (WODC) economic and social overview and scrutiny committee will consider a proposal tomorrow.

Councillor Duncan Enright suggested registering district pubs under Community Right to Bid laws in February. It gives communities the chance to nominate amenities that are important to residents.

They would be given time to raise money so they can bid to buy and take over the premises.

Mr Enright said: “Pubs are important local assets and WODC has a record of supporting pubs across the district.

“They are under threat as a result of a number of pressures, including the economic situation, the structure of the tied beer trade and high property prices.”

His proposal includes writing to MPs and the Campaign for Real Ale to ask for support in changing legislation so landlords can buy beer from brands other than their parent company.

The committee will consider whether to recommend it for approval and the final decision will be made by the full council.
