ALTHOUGH he never actually met his grandad, Keith Brooks from Horspath is incredibly proud.

And today he has spoken of his appreciation of a project to restore the graves of Victoria Cross heroes.

His grandfather Edward Brooks was a true hero. One of only two soldiers in his regiment to be awarded the medal, the sergeant major captured a German machine gun at Fayet in France and turned it on the enemy.

It’s recognition of what he did that Keith welcomes.

The Victoria Cross Trust will survey 74 graves of recipients, including that of Sgt Maj Brooks to see where funding is most needed.

There should be no question that this money is going to a worthy cause.

The graves of our war heroes offer a place where relatives, and even those who want to honour our brave soldiers, should be protected and maintained for years to come along with their legacy.
