A DECISION on whether a new discount supermarket can be built in Chipping Norton will be decided today.

Aldi wants to convert an old highways depot in Banbury Road into a shop with 76 parking spaces.

The store would create 10 full-time and 20 part-time jobs, but existing businesses have voiced concerns that it will affect their trade.

West Oxfordshire District Council planning officers have recommended it should be approved but its uplands planning sub-committee will make the final decision.

It will also consider plans to build 64 homes in Woodstock. Pye Homes wants to develop land near Marlborough School, in Shipton Road.

The scheme would include 32 affordable homes and range in size from one to four bedrooms. The application has been recommended for approval.

But officers have opposed plans for what is thought to be the largest community-owned solar farm in the world.

Green group Sustainable Charlbury wants to build the £5m facility on land owned by the Cornbury Park Estate.

More than 22,000 panels would generate enough electricity to power all of Charlbury’s 1,100 homes but officers say it would harm the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The sub-committee will meet at its council offices in Woodgreen, Witney, at 2pm.
