WITH prizes for ‘waggiest tale’, ‘best biscuit catcher’ and ‘loveliest eyes’, it was a far cry from Crufts.

But while the Cotswold Wildlife Park’s annual dog show may not have the glitz of more illustrious contests, it made up for it in fun.

Saturday’s show, dubbed Scruffs, saw 25 dogs and their owners competing for glory in a series of light-hearted categories, with awards also going to best canine hurdler, cutest puppy and to the dog ‘the judges would most like to take home’.

Among the visitors sporting rosettes at the Burford wildlife park were 18 month-old Radley and his owner, Campbell Hanley, right. Campbell, 10, was awarded a certificate for Best Handler, while his miniature schnauzer was judged Best in Show.

Campbell said: “I’m really proud of him. I’ll definitely be giving him a treat later.”

The event raised about £200 for the Banbury-based charity Dogs for the Disabled.

Show organiser Hayley Rothwell, who is normally found looking after the wildlife park’s collection of primates, said: “This is the fourth year we have held Scruffs, and we are really happy with how it went. It’s hard work to set up but we have had lots of help from volunteers – and we’ve seen lots of beautiful dogs.”
