HUMPTY, the iconic doll from the children’s TV show Playschool, has fetched more than £6,000 at auction.
The 53cm-high egg-shaped toy was sold at Bonham’s Auction House in Kidlington today to a private buyer for £6,250.
The hammer went down at £5,000 and the buyer also had to pay £1,250 in fees.
He was one of a number of original dolls made for the BBC show, which ran for more than 20 years from the mid-sixties.
He was valued at £1,200 and Rachel Gotch from the auction house was thrilled with the sale.
She said: “There was a lot of interest. We had about seven telephone lines all going at the same time for him and people in the room.
“I’m very pleased and excited that he got that price. I think he was worth it. But Humpty was a hard one to predict.”
