DIOGO Ross-Russell would rather spend his evening on a skateboard than the sofa.

The 13-year-old was taking part in a free skateboarding session hosted by Oxford Youth Ambition, an Oxford City Council programe to get children involved in sports.

Sessions in skateboarding, street hockey and table tennis are held for youngsters aged up to 21 each Friday at Cutteslowe Community Centre, Wren Road, from 7.30pm. All equip-ment is provided.

The Cutteslowe youngster said: “I’ve been skating for a year after a friend got me on a board.

“There was a taster session for the club and then I started going every week. The skate club is really good, they help us out with our tricks and moves. That’s why I like going.”

It's brilliant to see young people enjoying and excelling at a sport rather than lazing around on a sofa, but so disappointing to see the vehement opposition to skate parks which help these kids take up the sport.

Glad to see this sensible young chap wearing a helmet whilst skateboarding; there has been a tragic death of a young person in my area who injured their head when falling of a skateboard. A helmet doesn't look cool but it could be a life saver.
