A CARTERTON man will not go to prison after being found with cannabis in his pants.

Jonah Miles-Collett appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply. He was found with 40g of cannabis in his boxer shorts when stopped by police officers in Bridge Street, Witney, on November 23 last year.

It is estimated the cannabis, which will be destroyed, is worth up to £500.

Police officers raided his home and found a cannabis grinder and deal bags. On his mobile phone they also found evidence of him arranging to sell cannabis to his friends.

The 20-year-old resident of Black Bourton Road was given a six-month sentence suspended for 18 months.

He will also have to abide by a curfew that prevents him from leaving his house between 7pm and 6am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Sentencing him, Recorder Simon Blackford said: “Cannabis is not a hard drug as you know, but it is now realised that it can cause serious harm to a lot of people, particularly people who have used it for a long period of time.

“If you deal in cannabis you run the risk of contributing to that harm. The law regards that as a serious offence and I regard it as such a serious offence that it needs to be dealt with by means of a custodial sentence.”

In mitigation, Miles-Collett’s barrister Mark Dixon had said he had only sold to his friends to fund his own habit and that he had mental health issues.
