A REPORT which recommends an “arc of opportunity” for building new garden cities – including about half of Oxfordshire – is up for a top economic prize.

The proposed site which stretches from Southampton round to Folkstone in Kent is identified in a report called New Garden Cities.

Written by London urban design firm Wei Yang & Partners, it is one of five garden city plans shorlisted for this year’s Wolfson Economic Prize.

The theme of the competition is garden cities, inspired by the country’s housing need and Nick Clegg’s manifesto for encouraging garden cities published this year.

In their scheme, Wei Yang & Partners wrote: “Garden cities should be located in areas of greatest need and where there is a strong prospect of economic growth and development.”

The second Wolfson Economics Prize will be awarded to the entrant who best answers the question “How would you deliver a new Garden City which is visionary, economically viable, and popular?”

The winner, to be announced in September, will receive £250,000.
