THOUSANDS flocked to Wantage recreation ground for the first combined Wantage Carnival and Rock in the Park.

Visitors praised the hard work of teenage volunteers from the Sweatbox youth club who organised local bands for Saturday and Sunday.

The other half of the park was filled with bouncy castles, a climbing wall, reptiles, a tombola and a raffle.

Organisers hope the two-day event has raised thousands of pounds towards new play equipment at the park, but are still adding up the total.

Organiser Ray Collins

Ray Collins staged the first Wantage Carnival in 25 years in the market place last year, but this year merged it with Sweatbox’s annual Rock in the Park to attract more people.

Mr Collins, 44, who manages Peter Ledbury electricals in Grove Street, said: “Merging with Rock in the Park was a great idea. The work ethic of those kids was amazing.”

He estimated about 10,000 people visited over the two days. Visitors were invited to make a £1 donation on entry, but money from the bars, food sales and the funfair will also go towards new play equipment.
