A HOST of sporting events are set to get the city on their bikes in celebration of cycling this week.

As part of a country-wide initiative, Oxford Bike Week will offer free bike rides and other cycle-related events across the city from today until Sunday, June 22.

Cyclists Touring Club Oxford City, Cyclox – the cycling campaign for Oxford – and charity Sustrans have worked in partnership to organise the city’s week-long cycling festivities.

Sustrans volunteer Josie Woodcock said: “Oxford Bike week is about making everyday cycling for everyone.

“Lots of people are afraid to get on their bikes or most have not got on their bikes recently.

“It’s about making cycling more accessible for the people of Oxford and just celebrating cycling.”

The volunteer-led event will promote everyday cycling and aims to encourage residents to cycle more often.

With 12 rides on offer to cyclists, the event will cater for a variety of ages and riding abilities, including those who have not cycled before.

Participants can enjoy scenic paths during the event’s themed bike rides.

Courses will include Romans Ruins, Sculpture, Blue Plaque, World War One, Lord Nuffield and J.R.R Tolkien-themed routes.

Early morning and late night outings will also be on offer for the most daring of cyclists.

Thames Valley Police will host two community police roadshows giving residents the chance to learn more about cycle safety and security.

The awareness shows will take place in Broad Street between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday, June 18 and Thursday, June 19.

A bike maintenance session hosted by Broken Spoken Bike Co-op will be held at The Story Museum, in Pembroke Street.

Between 11am and 5pm, the event will cost visitors between £5 and £7 to learn how to mend their broken bikes.

Ms Woodcock said: “This is about people enjoying cycling and having fun on bikes and about getting people back on their bikes.

Cycling is a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air and the great outdoors. It’s a fast and easy means of transport. It’s healthy and fun and these rides will give people the opportunity to meet like-minded people.

Cycle events throughout the week will depart from Broad Street’s Visitor Information Centre.
