OXFORD is getting ready to go green as part of the city’s first low carbon week.

Over the course of the week, people will be able to visit environmentally friendly homes, learn how to make their lives greener and buy sustainable food.

There are more than 60 events taking place during the festival, which starts on Saturday.

Most of them are free and open to the public.

The week ends on Sunday, June 22, with the new Tandem Music Festival at the Hill End Centre near Farmoor, which includes talks and workshops on all aspects of the environment.

Jenny Carr, sustainable energy officer at the city council, said: “We are all really excited about our first ever Low Carbon Oxford Week – as well as being a big celebration of all the fantastic people, places and projects that make Oxford a low carbon city, it’s also an open invitation for everyone to get involved.

“We have managed to bring together more than 60 brilliant events all across the city so wherever you live there is something happening on your doorstep.

“With a music festival, food fairs, bike rides, comedy, films, workshops and family events there really is something for everyone to get excited about and involved in, and best of all almost all the events are free to attend.”

Turl Street Kitchen will play host to film screenings, talks and a dinner made up of food sourced from within 25 miles of the restaurant.

Meanwhile Oxford Brookes University will be putting on energy tours of its new John Henry Brookes Building, which has been designed to be energy efficient.

Charis Sharpe, the venue manager at Oxford Hub and Turl Street Kitchen, said: “Being a social enterprise that raises money for student hubs we are very involved in the community and in local social action.

“Helping reduce carbon emissions and raising awareness of it is part of our ethos.”
