A 28-MILE bike ride from Oxford city centre launched National Bike Week in the city on Saturday.

From June 14 to 22 a string of events will take place around Oxford to encourage cycling.

Graeme Fry, who took part in Saturday’s ride to North Leigh Roman Villa, said: “People enjoyed themselves and there was a real mix of people who took part.”

Josie Woodcock, co-organiser of Bike Week, said: “It is a wonderful way of getting healthy and getting out in the fresh air. And if anyone wants to do a taster cycle they should come along to one of our rides and see if they like it.”

Tonight, starting at 6pm outside the tourist information office in Broad Street, people can join the Bike Week team on a gentle two-hour ride to sites around Oxford connected with Lord Nuffield and Morris cars.

Tomorrow and Thursday from 10am, Oxford Police will run an all-day cycle safety and security roadshow in Broad Street.

On Wednesday there will also be a First World War history-themed 12-mile ride around Oxford.
