LONGWORTH Primary School pupils were inspired to go for gold by triple jumper Michael Puplampu yesterday.

Mr Puplampu, currently ranked third under-23 in the UK at his sport, dropped by to judge a sports morning.

Children ran a course inspired by the Olympic hopeful’s own regime, which included “spotty dog” running and arm waving, leg drives, press ups and star jumps.

They were even sponsored by parents to take on the challenge and raised money for the school.

Exhausted, the children had a chance to rest as Mr Puplampu gave a talk about his training and career so far.

He remembered how, early in his career, he had made a false start in a race, but didn’t let it get him down, and left the children with the message: “Never give up.”

Teacher Claire Cotton said: “The children loved it.

“When he showed them just how far he could jump with a tape measure they were gobsmacked.”
