EAST Oxford Community Association met last night to decide what it will do after being told to leave the Cowley Road centre it manages.

As reported in the Oxford Mail, Oxford City Council told the charity on Monday it had four weeks to vacate the community centre and raised “serious concerns” about the way it is run.

It means the city council will take over the running of the community centre on the corner of Princes Street and Cowley Road for the foreseeable future.

Colin Aldridge, vice chairman of the community association, said the trustees would meet to decide the way forward. He said they would issue a statement today.

Yesterday Tim Sadler, the city council’s executive director for community services, said he had “no option” but to intervene, saying the association had failed to allay his concerns and implement an action plan.

City councillor for St Clements Bev Clack said: “It couldn’t be allowed to continue in the way it was going because that wasn’t fair to anyone.

“My sense is that having the council managing the centre is the best option.”

The community association is required to leave the centre by Monday, July 21.

Council officials have said the current programme of events will be retained and existing tenants will remain in the centre.
