TRANSPORT minister Baroness Kramer visited Oxford yesterday to see some of the city’s sustainable transport initiatives.

She was taken on a tour of the city on an electric hybrid bus to see Oxford’s first eCar club in Summertown and Oxfordshire County Council’s cycle hire scheme at Thornhill Park and Ride.

The Lib Dem peer was also taken to Oxford City Council’s depot at Cutteslowe Park to see Department for Transport-funded electric vehicle charging points and the council’s fleet of electric and low emission vehicles.

She said: “Don’t underestimate the way that a lot of these projects come together.

“All of the projects, when you put them together, actually mark us out as a nation which is really committed to going as fast as it can to ultra-low emission vehicles.

“Very often these small projects are absolutely critical in changing the mindset so people who see these vehicles or use these vehicles think that actually my next car can be electric because they know it works really well or they go on a bus and understand that this is not a technology that is for milk floats and dinky toys.

“It is a really hard-working technology that can make a difference.”

She was joined on her tour of Oxford by city councillor John Tanner, the executive board member for Cleaner, Greener Oxford, and county councillor David Nimmo Smith, the cabinet member for transport.
