MONTHS after it launched a competition, Leys Community Market has chosen a new logo.
The winning design comes from mother-daughter team Megan and Leigh Bayley.
Their brightly-coloured design features fruit, vegetables and jams, as well as showing the market’s home of The Barn on Long Grounds, Greater Leys.
Leigh, 13, said: “The logo represents what products and services are available at the Leys Community Market.
“There are lovely jams, jellies, chutneys and cordials, there are awesome breads, lush pies and great children’s activities.”
Their logo came top out of 10 competition entries. The competition was launched in October last year.
Organiser Christine McDermott said: “It’s actually a combination of both of their entries.
“We’ve taken the wording and text from what Leigh had submitted and the design of Megan’s.
“It’s very bold, and it gives a very good, clear image of what we do.”
Explaining the delay in unveiling the winning design, she said: “The logo has been digitised by a local designer, Julian Durado.
“It took a lot longer getting it from a hand- drawn image to a proper logo than we thought.”
The market was set up in December 2012 by volunteers wanting to bring affordable local produce to the Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys estates.
Ms McDermott, from Greater Leys, said that the logo competition was an extension of the market’s ideals, adding: “It grew out of an idea looking to involve local people.
“We wanted the logo to be about what the market means to them.
“It was a chance for local people to contribute by finding an image that reflects the market, and to show their artistic talents.”
The entries were displayed at the market and shoppers were given the chance to vote for their favourite.
Ms McDermott said: “We went with voting rather than judging to capture that sense of people coming on board.
“It’s about being home-grown and encouraging community spirit, rather than it being done for them.”
